Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking
All drugs except alcohol and smoking tobacco are illegal (also Marihuana). From the age of 18 you are allowed to drink any kind of alcohol.
Drinking in Linz and Austria
Before we drink the first sip we usually raise our glasses and say “prost” to each other, clink our glasses and look into each other’s eyes while doing so.
| Beer | there are so many different brands of beer, so - try them all |
| Wine | there are very good wines all over Austria, so again - try them all |
| Schnaps | around 40% alcohol made of one single kind of fruit |
| Obstler | Schnaps made of different kinds of fruit |
| Stroh | rum available with 40, 60 and 80% alcohol |
| “Radler” | beer mixed with lemonade |
| “G´spritzer” | white wine with sparkling water |
We generally mix everything with everything!
Going Out
You will be personally introduced to the “Altstadt” (downtown) of Linz and all important places you have to know for getting drunk or dancing the night away.
Tipping
You’re only expected to give a tip if have you liked the service. You can just round off or give up to 10% of the gross amount. Simply say the total amount you want them to take when you hand over the money (it’s not usual to leave the tip on the table). Usually you only give tips for personal service (e.g. in a pub) and not in a supermarket.
Getting Robbed, Beaten Up, …
Usually you shouldn’t get into any troubles of that kind. Of course, there are also drunk people and you should be a little bit careful wandering around and making fun of bigger, bald, muscular, drunk people after midnight wearing knives or other weapons (just kidding).
Austria in general is a very safe country.
Flea-Market
Each Saturday, starting at 06h00 lasting til 12h00 at the main square (“Hauptplatz”).
Practice Alarm Every Saturday at 12h00
Public buildings test their sirens every Saturday at 12h00 with a hooting lasting about 15 seconds -> do not panic!

Most Austrians are Roman Catholics, but you can find lots of other faiths too. In every parish there is a mass on Sunday at 10h00. Everybody can join the mass without any problem (except a linguistic one).
Electricity
Standard voltage is 220 Volts AC at 50 Hertz.
